The entrance of the Port of Bournemouth is from the east, through the English Channel and Poole Bay. Also known as the Poole Harbour, on either side of the harbour when entering are the shores of Sandbanks (in particular, the peninsula, northeast and the Haven Hotel) and Studland beach (southwest).
It is located directly ahead of a number of islands, with the largest the Brownsea Island. The Port of Bournemouth boast of an area of roughly 36 km2 (14 sq. mi). Formerly used by the Romans as an invasion port for conquering southern England.
The biggest ship to dock in the harbour is the Norman Voyager on the 15 October 2013, and the second largest ship is the Armorique of Brittany Ferries. The Armorique of Brittany Ferries docked in the harbour for the first time on the 2 February 2010.
